美洲野牛分布於加拿大西部、美國、墨西哥東北部，是日行性群居動物，通常由母牛和小牛組成，遷移時會聚成大群，公牛多單獨行動，只有在繁殖期才會加入母牛群。 美洲野牛是北美洲體型最大的哺乳動物，儘管身軀龐大，奔跑時速仍可達60公里。公牛以用額頭撞擊的方式博鬥爭取領導權及交配權，贏的享有進食、喝水、在泥漿裡打滾等多方面優先權。 The American bison is the largest animal in North America. The males hit each other with their foreheads to determine leadership and mating rights. The American bison was on the American 5 cent coin from 1913 to 1938. In May 2016, President Obama made the American bison their national animal, giving it the same level of status as their national bird, the bald eagle.
