 The American bison is the largest animal in North America. The males hit each other with their foreheads to determine leadership and mating rights. The American bison was on the American 5 cent coin from 1913 to 1938. In May 2016, President Obama made the American bison their national animal, giving it the same level of status as their national bird, the bald eagle.
